2021 Summer Reading Program
“Tails and Tales” at the Skowhegan Free Public Library
While we are slowly getting back into the swing of things here at the library, this year's Summer Reading Challenge will be a bit different than usual. Due to COVID-19, we will still not be able to have programming at the library this summer (though stay tuned for one very special event at Coburn Park in July to celebrate the end of another wonderful Summer Reading Program!). In light of that, this summer's reading challenge will be a bit of a hybrid. We will continue to offer the Beanstack platform that we used last summer as an alternative reading log that can be completed entirely from home, but we will also go back to having physical reading logs that you can fill out and return right to the library! Take-home activity packets will once again be available each week, but this summer you will be able to come in during any of our regular open hours to pick them up every week (while supplies last).
The Summer Reading Challenge will run from June 21st – July 30th. Kids will track their reading and have a take-home activity kit each of these six weeks.
READING: We are asking parents to register their children on our online summer reading platform called Beanstack. You make your child’s profile and then each week you have the ability to track their reading (please sign up for the "Tails and Tales: Reading Logs" challenge in order to participate in this portion of the summer reading program). Alternatively, as the library is back open in full, you can register your child right at library and pick up a physical reading log to get started! We are encouraging participants to read 20 minutes a day, five days a week.
STORYTIME TAKE-HOME KITS: Each of the six weeks of this year's Summer Reading Challenge, we will be putting out a new storytime take-home activity kit. These kits will be everything your child needs to complete an activity that goes along with that Wednesday’s virtual storytime. If your child participates in this activity, they will be able to either mark it off on the Beastack app (which can be accessed after joining the "Tails and Tales: Activities" challenge there), earning them an activity badge for the week, OR by keeping track of completed activities on your child's paper reading log. Complete all six activities and your child will get to come in to the library to pick up a Bookie Cookie certificate for a free cookie at the Bankery (which can also be mailed).
We also hope that you will encourage your child to watch our weekly storytime which will be posted on our Facebook page. The story will be shared every Wednesday at 10:15.
